Music, apart from being a source of great listening pleasure, has a lot of other facets to it. A common use of music is to play it in the background to create an ambience for guests or for a get together, where different groups of people can all revel in the music and thus find a common ground to connect. A very useful function of music is as a therapeutic tool. After a hard day's work, when our nerves are frazzled and we're on edge, if we try listening to soothing music with soft beats, it proves to be therapeutic and we find our tensions and exhaustion drifting away. That is because the beats directly influence the right hemisphere of the brain, and the effect of overall well being is induced. Do use music as a tool at therapy and bid goodbye to the day to day tensions, as appropriate music can give your brain a massage and ease those frazzled nerves. No wonder listening to Mozart, and other classical music, and contemporary instrumental like Kenny G has a phenomenal effect on our sense of well being. Give it a shot after a long day at work, and see for yourself, how your mind feels lighter !

Have you ever heard about Dr. Alfred Tomatis? He was an internationally know otolaryngologist who developed a special method using music. Tomatis was convinced that many psychic problems like reading problems, dyslexia, depression, schizophrenia and autism result from a failure of communication, which has to do with listening and the ear. To train his patients, he used altered recordings of the patient's mother and electronically modified music by Mozart (that's why some people call it the Mozart Effect). He claimed that his method can also help adults fight depression, learn foreign languages faster, develop better communication skills, and improve both creativity and on-the-job performance.

I've never tried it myself, I must admit, but I know a lady who did and was very impressed by the results. So, if you'd like to learn more about it: http://www.tomatis.com/English/Articles/Biography.html

Indeed I have heard of Tomatis, and of the Mozart Effect. Glad that you brought it up, coz while starting the discussion, the work of Tomatis had completely slipped my mind. But now that you mention it, it rings a bell. And yes I can definitely vouch for the positive effect music would be having on learning a new language, simply on the basis of the fact that three year old kids pick up nursery rhymes so quickly - coz they get absorbed in the music of the rhyme, that it enhances their learning of the words. This is called 'whole brain learning' - the music in the rhyme stimulates the right hemisphere of the brain, which then allows the left hemisphere to memorize the words very quickly, thus facilitating whole brain learning. And thanks for mentioning the 'tomatis' link, will surely check it out.

I totally agree. Music has an effect on many different levels. For instance, Drumming not only can set a mood, it can also raise the energy level in a room at an alarming rate. Soft music, like a great deal of "New Age" music can relax many people, however, it also makes some turn a deaf ear. Heavy metal music makes some people very agitated and others find a release. Although, I think if we were all honest, we would have to say whether it would be nursery rhymes, Dr. Seuss or Disney music - that brings out the inner child in us all.

Right, that's what I use to do as well: just put on some energetic and positive stuff I can dance along and sorrows and pain lift almost instantly, at least a bit ... ;-)

Yes I agree with you, listening to energetic stuff and dancing along can reduce the unpleasantness of life at least a bit..

I agree completely. There is certain songs that lift my spirits and others than are extremely depressing.
I often use it as a type of therapy. I listen to woodwinds while I meditate and jazz while my boyfriend is around and rock when I'm with a group of friends.
Music is very powerful. It can effect our moods, help plants grow and there has even been studies that suggest if an infant listens to symphony they'll have a higher I.Q.

I find it's liberating. It can have me jumping around the room like a complete twat. I guess it gives me something to relate to as well, but just generally something to enjoy. I'll probably have more to add later.
