Music is very emotional - and an interesting topic when it comes to personality. We use to define ourselves through the music that we hear. So how about a correlation between music and personality? Here are some preliminary thoughts. (If you are just visiting the page, don't forget to take our free personality test!)

Pop Music is the music that sells best. We know that Realists represent almost 50% of the population. Doers cover another 23%. We have to assume that those types would prefer what we call mainstream music. Doers might prefer a more energetic version, probably Rock music.

Thinkers is a difficult one. I've learned from our discussions here at iPersonic that Thinkers use music to "disrupt" their thinking. I would suggest that Thinkers either analyze music (if they know about music, play an instrument etc.) or they use music to get away of their thinking. "Analytical music" could be Jazz, Classical music and Electro. Disruptive music could be Metal.

What about the Idealists? We have been talking about a spiritual approach of Idealists in our "Religion and personality types" discussion. All is one. World music could fit in there. Emotional, spheric and "esoteric" music also. And Folk music. Enya and Yann Tiersen ...

But there's more. Do you sometimes "slip into another personality" by listening to specific music? Listening to "energetic music" like "Harder Better Faster Stronger" from Daft Punk seems to take me from analytical thinking to individualistic doing ...

So, what music do you prefer? How does this correspond to your personality type? What role is music playing in your life?

Hey, I love King of Convenience too! And guess what, I just try to search Kelly Sweet and Yann Tiersen to figured out that I love them so much! Oh this is so great. Ann, I do need more of your music recommendation. :)

I have only ever heard the soundtrack to that movie, and I listen to it very often, but I have yet to actually watch the movie... I guess I should go out and rent it soon. :)

Yes, yes, yes! You'll love it. Trust me!

Last autumn we went to Paris to visit the original locations of the film at Montmartre ... I really am a fan ... ;-)

Personally I love any type of music. Although I prefer Alternative Rock. Often times has it happen to me that I get lost in my music. I slip into an alter ego. But that's because when I listen to my music I often think of a situation that may be happening and how my character may be reacting to that. :)

Am I the only one who doesn't set foot outside without his/her iPod in their ears. I get the weirdest looks from people as I walk around the mall, Wal-Mart or wherever with my earphones in. It's quite funny actually, as my little brother does the exact same thing...even when we go out together.

For me, there's just too much "static" in the world these days. Mustic is both my sword and my shield, I guess.

actually you're not the only one...so,as an answer to the famous line of julius caesar "you too, brutus?",my answer would be definitely "YES".i,personaly, feel unsecure without my music...and i often admit that :

"Sword and shield" - a good metaphor. I believe this constant wearing of iPods is often a method to block out unwished intruders from the world surrounding us, to stop the constant, overwhelming stream of information we're exposed to in our modern world. And an attempt to put some kind of distance between ourselves and others when our "personal zone" is being invaded (e. g. when sitting in the subway or standing in a crowd).

Exactly! This trend has been going on a while. I remember when the Sony Walkman (then the Discman) was all the rage.

You are definitely not the only one, LOL!

The only time I don't listen to my iPod is during Shabbat. In NYC, I see tons of people listening to their iPods. I don't know if they are as attached to theirs as I am ;)

You're not the only one. My youngest brother are the same as you. :) And the reason is the same as what Felicitas has written below. To create the distance between his world and the real world.

music should be diversified n versatile, n it's up to us to use the different styles of music to inspire n affect us in what we wish to accomplish or what how we wish to feel
but the greatest emotion is when we are totally submerged in the kind of music we are listening to and interact with it by dancing till we become one with the beat

I've always thought that musical tastes must have something to do with our personality, and it must be true, because I'm an idealist and I love Enya and folk music. But I also like metal (not very extreme, though, more like symphonic metal), and I guess it shows that part of me which is more doer than idealist.

There's a Spanish group called Mago de Oz which mixes metal with folk music, and they are perfect for me because they use the two kinds of music that I like the most! They are my favourite group. I'll upload some of their music in my page soon.
I also love Nightwish, Within Temptation and similar groups.
