iPersonic Community

The community based on the iPersonic personality test.

Music is very emotional - and an interesting topic when it comes to personality. We use to define ourselves through the music that we hear. So how about a correlation between music and personality? Here are some preliminary thoughts. (If you are just visiting the page, don't forget to take our free personality test!)

Pop Music is the music that sells best. We know that Realists represent almost 50% of the population. Doers cover another 23%. We have to assume that those types would prefer what we call mainstream music. Doers might prefer a more energetic version, probably Rock music.

Thinkers is a difficult one. I've learned from our discussions here at iPersonic that Thinkers use music to "disrupt" their thinking. I would suggest that Thinkers either analyze music (if they know about music, play an instrument etc.) or they use music to get away of their thinking. "Analytical music" could be Jazz, Classical music and Electro. Disruptive music could be Metal.

What about the Idealists? We have been talking about a spiritual approach of Idealists in our "Religion and personality types" discussion. All is one. World music could fit in there. Emotional, spheric and "esoteric" music also. And Folk music. Enya and Yann Tiersen ...

But there's more. Do you sometimes "slip into another personality" by listening to specific music? Listening to "energetic music" like "Harder Better Faster Stronger" from Daft Punk seems to take me from analytical thinking to individualistic doing ...

So, what music do you prefer? How does this correspond to your personality type? What role is music playing in your life?

Ronnie, it is Maya Sakamoto. I haven't heard about Mary Sakamoto before but I found out she is a fine jazz singer when I googling about her. Btw Maya Sakamoto is actually not fully jazz singer.

Actually I'm blind when talking about music. I'm just the listener and like many kinds of music, but mostly are pop, rock, reggae, and disco. For me, the lyrics are important (but not always), that's why some of my favorites music have a deep meaning and memories. ;) Music is my background in my daily life. I need it for relaxing, thinking, giving me energy and to cheer up.

Here are the collections of mine.. Roxette, Sting & the Police, Züri West (Swiss Mundart), Patent Ocshner (Swiss Mundart), Aerosmith, Adrian Stern (Swiss Mundart), Alanis Morisette, Shakira, Amy Grant, Metalica, Deep Purple (smoke on the water), Avril Lavigne, Anggun (English, French and Indonesian), Backstreet Boys, U2, Michael Learns to Rock, Bad Religion (When I see you smile), BAP (verdamn lang her & wahnsinn), Blink 182 (all the small thing), Bob Marley, UB40, Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams, Chicago, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Queen, Gotthard, Christina Stuermer (in German), Core 22, the Cranberries, Confession (Swiss Mundart), The Cure (Friday I'm in love), Lionel Richie, Tracy Chapman, Def Leppard, Dire Straits, Scorpions, White Lions, Phil Collins, Europe, Extreme, Faith No More, Guns n Roses, Firehouse, Mr Big, Nazareth (lovehurt), Red Hot Chili Pepper, Richard Marx, and many more including the songs in Indonesian & Swiss Mundart.

Interesting, I'm an AT and the range of stuff I like is sort of odd. I like most classic rock, (The Doors, Kansas, The Eagles, Bob Seager The Beatles, etc.) I like Evanescence, Fireflight, Flyleaf, Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Paramore, (I liked them before anyone knew who they were, *laughs*) R.E.M, stuff like that. I also like many of the old songs from like the 40's, and 50's. (That's my favorite kind of music to sing. o_O) Then there's Johnny Cash, (R.I.P Man In Black,) Weird Al Yankovic, Tiny Tim, *laughs* Feist, Daft Punk is pretty awesome, Simon and Garfunkle, classical, pretty much anything that's not rap or Country. =P

I also analyze music. Sometimes I just sit by myself and listen to music, but I tune out everything else, (including the singing) and simply listen to the instruments. It's fascinating how everything fits together perfectly to make one coherent sound. Part of the reason I do this is simply because it's interesting, but it's also because I play piano by ear, (I can't read music at all, I have no one to teach me,) I can usually play something, (not perfectly, but it's recognizable,) the first time I hear it because I analyze things so darn much. =P

So, to sum it all up if you're too lazy to read all that; I like rock, classic rock, Johnny Cash, (he's in a class of his own. =P) Oldies, jumpy dancy songs, and random stuff like Tiny Tim and Weird Al. =D

I would share the Doors, Johnny Cash and Daft Punk with you. Interesting. AT's really seem to have a brooooad scope when it comes to music. Seems to match the way we read. We obviously need a lot of stimuli ...

At first I thought there wouldn't be a connection but the more I thought about the more I agree. I fall in several different catagories but they are pretty much ass realists. I love jazz, alternative, and most importantly ska. I do want my jazz to be upbeat and I could care less about the lyrics. Really the only genre I can no stand is acoustic (which emo wants to fit into this but at least some have a beat). To me it's easy to complain about this and that and have a guitar in the background. Not like having a 8 piece band.

I think modern Jazz is interesting for the music is very much based of a classical structure (I think anyway) and it is played almost in a resist way against that structure.Without the original structure it wouldnt be much but it offers an abstraction and a rebellion against the purity of the original. If the original is seen as a line, the new expressions take us on little trips away from that line and back again (sometimes). Even in the one type of music I am sure we can find each personality type, just different versions of the music.
