Music is very emotional - and an interesting topic when it comes to personality. We use to define ourselves through the music that we hear. So how about a correlation between music and personality? Here are some preliminary thoughts. (If you are just visiting the page, don't forget to take our free personality test!)

Pop Music is the music that sells best. We know that Realists represent almost 50% of the population. Doers cover another 23%. We have to assume that those types would prefer what we call mainstream music. Doers might prefer a more energetic version, probably Rock music.

Thinkers is a difficult one. I've learned from our discussions here at iPersonic that Thinkers use music to "disrupt" their thinking. I would suggest that Thinkers either analyze music (if they know about music, play an instrument etc.) or they use music to get away of their thinking. "Analytical music" could be Jazz, Classical music and Electro. Disruptive music could be Metal.

What about the Idealists? We have been talking about a spiritual approach of Idealists in our "Religion and personality types" discussion. All is one. World music could fit in there. Emotional, spheric and "esoteric" music also. And Folk music. Enya and Yann Tiersen ...

But there's more. Do you sometimes "slip into another personality" by listening to specific music? Listening to "energetic music" like "Harder Better Faster Stronger" from Daft Punk seems to take me from analytical thinking to individualistic doing ...

So, what music do you prefer? How does this correspond to your personality type? What role is music playing in your life?

I enjoy listening to songs that have deep, amibiguous lyrics. It is fun for me to analyze the lyrics and create personal interpretations of them. Classical music is ideal for contemplation (to me, anyway). Classical pieces do not have words that guide your thinking along a specific avenue or influence your interperation towards a certain path. The pieces are very open to your mind and you have flexibility with your creativity when reflecting upon them. You only have the tune, etc, to judge. I would compare a classical composition to a story being conveyed with a series of pictures without words. The fact that there are no words could require the person viewing them to add elements themselves to explain aspects. The person viewing it might also enjoy adding words to express their own thoughts on the story itself.

I have a broad choice of music. I can admire pop, classic, jazz musics. Any music that seems gentle to my hearings are my type. Hard rock musics don't impress me. Music is what I use to create deeper imaginations. I am a thinker but I don't see that music "disrupt" my thinking. I study better when I listen to music. I can even study all night long with the company of music. I can also be different with every kind of music. I create stories and actions out of every music. but what I like most in music is the melody or the tune rather than the lyrics. That's why sometimes my friends get surprise when I admire a music which are intended for the so called "emotional punk" when it's not in my personality at all.

My music and personality varies on my mood. I go by mood. Sometimes I like classical, rap, 70's music, folk, and techno, also...jazz at times. Whatever Im in the mood for is definantly what I listen to. I like different sounds. My favorite places to go are World Market and earthbound stores cause they have music from all over the world there for purchase.

I prefer different types depending on what I'm doing:
instrumental-for concentration on work or studies
opera-for passion
R&B- to feel sexy
rock-to give my mind a break from spinning wheels(which is constantly) and energy

This is a very interesting thought because I am very much of a thinker, analytical and always trying to analyze everything and ev´ryone around me!! Tho I am very intreverted and always keeps to myself I like to sit down havin some philosophical moments and listen to classical music at the same time as I happen to be a classical musician!

I'm a musician and when it comes to music I'm probably more Analytical than my actual type (ED)... I'm more keen on Progressive Rock, Jazz and Blues, maybe the Rock part is the essential ED talking but I like to analyse music, otherwise sounds sort of dull... lol

Have you ever tried classical music while studying? It seems to help people study and such better and more quickly. probably not everything but it might help.. i think it depends on the music you are listening to.
