Music is very emotional - and an interesting topic when it comes to personality. We use to define ourselves through the music that we hear. So how about a correlation between music and personality? Here are some preliminary thoughts. (If you are just visiting the page, don't forget to take our free personality test!)

Pop Music is the music that sells best. We know that Realists represent almost 50% of the population. Doers cover another 23%. We have to assume that those types would prefer what we call mainstream music. Doers might prefer a more energetic version, probably Rock music.

Thinkers is a difficult one. I've learned from our discussions here at iPersonic that Thinkers use music to "disrupt" their thinking. I would suggest that Thinkers either analyze music (if they know about music, play an instrument etc.) or they use music to get away of their thinking. "Analytical music" could be Jazz, Classical music and Electro. Disruptive music could be Metal.

What about the Idealists? We have been talking about a spiritual approach of Idealists in our "Religion and personality types" discussion. All is one. World music could fit in there. Emotional, spheric and "esoteric" music also. And Folk music. Enya and Yann Tiersen ...

But there's more. Do you sometimes "slip into another personality" by listening to specific music? Listening to "energetic music" like "Harder Better Faster Stronger" from Daft Punk seems to take me from analytical thinking to individualistic doing ...

So, what music do you prefer? How does this correspond to your personality type? What role is music playing in your life?

For pop music, I like the slow rock ones. I like blue Jazz and those of norah jones and Emi Fuijita. In general, I like music that eases tension and calms the mind. Not too sure if the rest of the HI bears the same traits. I dislike heavy mentals and musical sounds produced from electric guitar. Hearing that for a long time will give me a migraine. I like traditional musics and folk songs... especially those which are produced from traditional musical instrument like the japanese taiko, chinese guqin, scottish pipe and the indian sitar.

well, i'm an energetic doer and I am really into the 'energetic' type of music but i also like classical music and the electro genre as well. I listen to just about everything I can get my hands on including genres like riot grrl, horror punk, classical, techno, experimental, emotional, and grindcore. Whether it be bands like bjork, the devil wears prada, animo, queen adreena, bikini kill, or classical composers such as bach, or milhaud. As long as it's not country i'll listen to it. I despise country. No idea why, it just gives me a headache.

I love classical songs so much among all the other music genre. And I agree with Marcel that listening to music is one of the thinkers' ways of diverting their thoughts. Music is like a chiropractor for me...

I like music which I can match with my mood because I like any type of music as long as I can feel the emotions being poured into the music by the musician.

Aside from classical music, I also like pop, mellow and rock. Singing a song , or, even just listening to it indeed affects me emotionally. It happened to me that when i listened to a song, i began to feel different. I believe that:

"In every song, a story.... in every story,..... sympathy."

well i listen to a wide range of music, depending on my mood for that day... when i'm feeling good about myself, it's rock music. when i'm feeling really low, it's usually the mellow ones. classical music helps me think...

I listen to almost everything, I am an AT no doubt (It is VERY true), but I still find myself listening to fast beats for just about everyday. I love them and I honestly do not see myself landing within the bounds of classical, Jazz or another slightly soothing genre anytime soon.

Well, I prefer, rock, metal, emo, punk etc. I have to say. I keep everything to myself. I find it very hard talking to people and trusting people. I am very emotional and stuff. And I really do have to say. Music Makes My Life. It is up there next to my friends and family. Music inspires me to do things. It is like an escape from the fierce reality of life. Without it, I don't no where I would be. If you don't listen to them, I would recommend evanescence. x
