Okay, I wanted to start this discussion, to listen to other opinions of what follows after death. I though about it a long time and discussed it for hours with my friends and family. I think here is a good place to start a discussion about it. First, I want to say that everyone can take part in it. It doesn't matter in what you believe, its only a talk about what could happen.

I think everyone will be reborn after death. The reason is simple: the physical expression of the "Conservation of energy" told us, that no energy could dissapear without a trace. And isn't the "soul" a kind of energy, too? In this case a "life energy". The reason of life is to learn in my opinion. In every life of your several ones you learn a little bit more of everything what is to know. You feel every emotion, live every situation that exists. If you are "finished", you may raise to a higher existance and learn even more. My theories are based on a kind of process of development of your own self. "On the other side" you may remember the past lifes. But in every new life, you will have a new start, to make other experiences. I also believe in Providence, so everything what happens to you has got a higher purpose.

This is a roughly view in my opinion about this fascinating subject. But please note, that these are only my thoughts about it, so it's okay if you believe in everything, as long as you are happy with it. You can post it here, I'm always interested in other perspectives.

Your take on this is interesting, but mine's much simple: there's nothing. We're gone, nothing remains. Nothing 'beyond'. The end.

And as you said, these are only my thoughts about it ;-)

Correct. And that's a fact, I always see as a very important thing. Freedom of speech. But you're not alone. The most people I asked think there will follow nothing and it's the big black end. ;-)

if there is nothing how can it be black? ;o)

hmmm, I doubt that there is something after death and in a way it doesn't matter. Yet there is still some little bit of hope left since I truly want the spark of life to be something special, so special that it would be worth it to continue one's existence.

Case A - there is no existence after death, we have no way to be upset about it thus worrying is pointless
Case B - there is an existence ... good for us

Patrice Leiteritz, don't take this the wrong way but your reasoning hasn't convinced me yet, you make use of the first law of thermodynamics (no loss of energy) yet you ignore the second law which states that each system of energy increases its entropy/degree of chaos over time. Reincarnation would constitute a reduction of entropy - to be reborn means to start over, something that doesn't usually happen with time. ... ok it does happen but only on the quantum level but that gives me a headache anyway...

And what if we're just living in a computer simulation? ;-)

This paper argues that at least one of the following propositions is true: (1) the human species is very likely to go extinct before reaching a “posthuman” stage; (2) any posthuman civilization is extremely unlikely to run a significant number of simulations of their evolutionary history (or variations thereof); (3) we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation. It follows that the belief that there is a significant chance that we will one day become posthumans who run ancestor-simulations is false, unless we are currently living in a simulation. A number of other consequences of this result are also discussed.

We thinker types are supposed to ad such stuff to discussions ;-)

I am not sure if they serve any galactic gargle blasters at Oxford University ;-)

And thanks for the fish!

The original Douglas Adams Society was founded at Oxford University in 1990, and continued as a university institution until 2000.
...
in reality the activities of such groups focus very little on the author, and more on getting drunk

Computer simulation? Sounds like "The Matrix"... ;-)
