Which one, as there are so many to many different people meaning many different things. For me it is personal and whether i am right or wrong, it comes down to what I believe is to be true to me( faith ).

u are wrong, there isnt one God we are expected to blieve in.what about the cultures that have about 20 gods?aCtually we are not expected to believe in anything, its just an impression!pPl stop living in an illusion :D
Discussing religion can be very vague and dangerous sometimes for each one of us has different beliefs and perspective in regards to our culture. Anda is right, what if in some countries, they believe they have more than one God? In my country, we believe that there are 3 Persons in 1 God. I think there are many religions because they are looking for something which they believe in along with the people who they have common with. I think there are conflicts because we can be closed-minded to our beliefs and not accepting other people's beliefs. Faith is the most important thing. Without it, we cannot believe that there is God or gods for that matter.
As a GT I (supposedly) have an inate capacity to generate new ideas - here is one I have been thinking about lately. We are all used to re-structures and amalgamations or divisions in culture, politics, government, corporations, the arts and the sciences. All walks of life and cultures have some level of re-organisation occuring. Not so with religon. In many respects, religion is inherently conservative. It tries to hang on to beliefs that may have been generated many years ago - like centuries - ideas and beliefs that have stood the test of time - that have not been changed by the forces of change such as shifting morality or governments. There is much good about that as it moderates the highs and lows of society. But now with increasing globalisation and globalist thinking (read globalism) the so called religions of the world are being compared and are in many respects are now competing and conflicting more than ever. This is the first time all the major religions have really faced such competition. Notwithstanding that there have been various religion based wars etc.
My point is that in step with the global growth and exhange of ideas (as arguably evidenced by sites such as ipersonic and the exchanges that happen on that site) there should be a re-strcuturing of god and the systems of god. I propose that there be appointed a new god - a chief god - that god should be agreed to be more or less in charge of all other gods from all existing and future religions. The new god should even take over from those religions that currently think there is only one god. That is the new chief god will be in charge of that single god and all other gods. It may sound a little crass but it is like unifying or recombining the different boxing titles of the world or foming a union of states to maketh one country (like the 50 odd states of the USA coming together to form one country). Once all religions have buried their superiority and ego complexes and agreed that while there can be many gods there is only one chief god (and that has been agreed by all the existing religions) then there can be a greater coming together of the world's humanity. Of course the chief god will not have to have a say in everything, some matters can be left to the second in charge gods but the agreement with the chief god will have to have set out the basics. That agreement would require greater thought and longer debate than I can give it right now but would probably cover peace on earth, absolute recognition of human rights and adequate environmental protection (particularly of biodiversity up to a point). On the more spiritual side the chief god would allow other religions to further their own spiritual guide as long as it did not impact on the basics and other religions. Let's face it it's time for a change in god land, there has been too much conjecture, misery and tom-foolery with the current conflicting system of religions. Now for all those that have a problem with inventing - developing a new god please remember that it is highly likely that the orignal god or gods were invented and that I am not suggesting that we do away with those existing gods. I merely suggest that at this time of calamitous change and uncertainty in the world we all get behind a new united god. Not by promoting any of the existing gods but bringing on a new one - regards Aidan.

Aidan, i have no prob what so ever about bringing a new God..., tht is ur opinion and im sure ull find many other ppl in this world tht would be more than happy with ur idea...i still think a God shldnt be something tht u bring and it wld be something tht u really feel. But on the other hand ur right, most ppl brought God without feeling Him.The Emperor Constantine tried to do the same even he was a pagan himself..but it was a wise move.Call it religion, politic, church, wteva..i call it mostly a way to manipulate other ppl's minds.God will never be 1 but will always be the same in a different shape or order
Anda, thanks for your response to my suggestion about inventing a unifying god, when I read your response I liked it, I like the idea about feeling god more than thinking-inventing god, immediately raises the question of what is or may be a god, I then began to think about how your view was not inconsistent with my idea, it is really an enormous question but certainly one to ponder, I still like the idea of unifying the gods but not subverting any of them, my present view is that it all points to humanity's desire and in some respects incredible longing to have a parental or guiding figure to keep them in check - that is a also a psychological concept - child, adult, parent - I suppose I am all for people generating their own gods with feeling - what I struggle with is how gods are imposed on individuals and communities for all the wrong reasons or without sufficient questioning - why should certain conservative values continue to be passed from generation to generation as if they belong or emanate from a god without real ownership by the current generations other than slavish acceptance - at its least it often seems to me to be a very basic notion and one that does not really allow the individualism of people to shine - as you say it manipulates minds - I do not believe we will get to the bottom of this one but I still think that a shake up is required - the other aspect of god talk is that aside from humanity on earth whether the universe has a master of any such shape or form - when I think about the totality of the universe I merely think beware of guesswork - a god is a convenient way to explain things we do not know - but a personal god may be different.

Good evening my dear Aidan :).I quess u became one of my favourites regarding this discussion :D.Im not 100 % sure but i think u were talking about religion as a tradition?ill be honnest with u nd i did have a few drinks before i wrote my comment so i do apologise if i got something wrong hehe.I do like the idea of bringing all the ppl to 1 religion but i do think its impossible in such a godless world :D.Then again..we need to put ourselves in other ppls situation..if ive ever learned something from this world, tht is to try to understand :).if the others cnt put themselves in others situation tht is because they cnt do it nd because they really think tht wt they believe in is good nd probably they do think they touch god in tht way.i really do accept all religions nd have nothing against them as time as it dsnt affects some1 tht dsnt want to be affected or not involved in any of those.
what is human without religion,blind..religion is as a light.but, we must not lost our rational and logicalness on the things in life.
example, You love pork, but your friend don't, so would you kill him for that?no!
sometimes, think, why there are so much religion in this world? buddhism, christianity, islam, jews, hindu, shinto, taoism, baha, and so much more..
maybe there are some differences among them, but why must we chasing the ' differences' but not the advantages or the good sides of a religion.
i found myself blest as i live in malaysia, which we have malays, chinese(i am),and indians, although we come from different background, we manage to tolerant with each other..
we might think something that we do or believe in our religion maybe be a taboo to others or vice versa.but , sometimes, just a pinch of understanding is enough...
Personally, im a buddhist, which in my religion, we did not believe in any supreme power.but some of my friends are Muslim and christian.... i find myself easy to mix with them as i understand well what they believe and i do not reject it as a taboo.
Logically, the difference in religion differentiate us.so , it actually make up the colour of the world.won't it be dull if there is only one religion?
human is different, so it make our life colourful...
as a conclusion, understanding is important.i dont agree with Aiden Kelly opinion as a new god maybe appointed.....the facts is , can you sure how many people will follow this new god??? and how about the one who dont? kill them?? as i said, difference make our life colourful..it is important for us to live with one heart and have a relative open nind.
Stop arguing about whose is/are better, we all are the best as we have fought a great war with millions of soldier before we even knew it.... i think you all know what i mean. so human, love others as you love your religion!!!!!!!
I am really glad to see there are respected individuals having interest in the subject and share their opinions about the topic. I would like to remind you that we are not here to criticize and judge each others’ thoughts and believes but purely share ours. And I am sure everybody who has a say in this forum is open-minded enough not to be offended by others’ opinions and vice versa, especially when it comes to religion.
I think Anda is right to some extent when she mentioned we are not expected to believe in any thing and have to agree with Darren that religion is a personal issue. But almost all of us believe in some power that created us and the universe. This power in religious countries and cultures defined as “God” or The Greater Power.
Let’s put it this way. We live in a society surrounded by religious thoughts and groups especially in multi-cultural cities around the globe, and grew up in religious families, we are expected NOT forced to believe in The Greater Power because our society requires us to, for example, going to Mosque on a Friday for Muslims or to Church on a Sunday for Christians etc. We are expected to say our prayers at the dinner table or on Thanksgiving and other occasions. Well, who are we say our prayers to and who are we thanking??? (The Greater Power that most of us and religious people call” God”).
So Anda, this is not illusion. This is the society that we are a part of and living in. Millions of people get together around the world to listen to what Pope has to say to the followers and worshipers or in Muslim countries they gather to listen to their Imam and see what he has to say about religions and God, but for what??? Just to prove to the others that their religion is the better one and the unique one and that’s where conflicts start. Even the major religions that have sub-divisions like Islam with divisions like Shia and Suni have major disagreements, despite the fact that they all believe in one “God” and study Quran. The same goes for Christianity.
To have a comment on Aidan’s view on the topic I have to say that “God” is not something that we appoint or invent. We can not worship what we create. “God” in general may not even exist and made up by ancestors and then passed to us and continued till today. This may sound lame but even the Holy books such as the Bible or the Quran may have been produced just to make people believe in The Greater Power. (One can never be absolutely certain and convincing about this)
Common sense wouldn’t allow us to create and worship “God” which is created by the hands of human beings. It’s like appointing a President for the whole world only with a power to create and eliminate. This appointment of “God” represents human’s weakness and the necessity to be led.
Only if this matter of believing in “God” and the religions that most of us practice till this day, could be absolutely personal and kept to ourselves, a massive proportion of related problems wouldn’t even exist. Looking forward to see more comments,

Ardalan,
Thank you for paying attention to my comment :), bless u! Sometime people find it difficult to understand what i say and i apologise if i ever ofended someone- Illusion-The society tht we live in might as well be One .Again i wont say it is as it would be a dangerous statement for most people :). Anyway on this page it has been proved tht ppl cnt have the same religion because as everybody knows we r all different, brought up in different cultural nd religious backrounds.Ppl will always fight if not for religion then for politic, money, fame, survival, views, supremacy and so on...all of those r part of our society and because we live in a society we will always have part of them.Again, if we were primitve we wld fight for other reasons as our ancestors did. There will always be bright ppl, v smart ppl to manipulate, v weak ppl to be manipulated, neutrals and the ones tht will fight against. Everything looks so logic.Ardalan, u call it human weakness as it might as well be and God might as well be the opposite of common sense but we ppl need it, so is better not to break the bridge tht some of need to pass.I have ppl around me , maybe weak ones but v warmhearted ppl tht wld have never been able to survive without God.I feel the pain of ppl using religion and God to destroy as we know many examples; That is why i said i have nothing against religion as time as it dsnt affect someone tht shldnt be affected and im doing my best to listen to everyone's pain nd try to understand them , without showing such a strong, strict selfview. So they wldnt feel tht youd have something against their views.
Thank you
