I was wondering about the different types of hobbies people have and if there a link between personality types and hobbies. I'm DI and I love painting and art and poetry and color. And if you're an artist does your personality type distinguish the type of art you like or do? I like impressionism, realism. and surrealism.

Everything I read about my personality type(s) [ DI, INFP according to the Meyers-Briggs type indicator] says that I am an artist, or at least have the capability to be. I don't feel that I have any artistic talent. The only artsy thing I do is beadwork. The hobbies I really enjoy are more nature based. I like kayaking, hiking, connecting with my spirituality through nature. I think this has more to do with my Native American ancestory, though, than my personality type. I think my personality type influences my perspective on my life experiences. But, that is just my opinion.

It's a good opinion. Never thought of it that way. I was just trying to see if there were any other correlations between the personality types, besides the obvious.

You are obviously not only a thoughtful person, but also quite intelligent. It will be interesting to see where this topic goes.

I'm a HI/INFP and I love to read and draw. :) It doesn't mean I draw super well, but I CAN do it if I want to, I can make more than a stickman :-P I do think that personality has something to do with it, yes, certainly. As for which styles one would like, I think that is something with personality too. I am the sort who likes the realistic art, the stuff where you can see what something is, but I also like some of the "different" art, where you just have a lot of colours together or something. It really depends, if it catches my eye and it appeals to me, I will like it, regardless what kind of art it is. I do have certain difficulties in understanding some of the modern art today, I have to admit that, but, in general, I like almost all art.

thanks for your response. I think idealists look at art that catches our eye. Maybe the others wil drum in, but Im thinking thinkers look at it in a completely differernt perspective. Do you and Lisa have anything for poetry?I'm big poetry buff, writing as well as reading.

Can't say that I'm skillful at it, but yes I do like to write and read poetry. The catch is that I only seem to be interested when I am in certain moods-sad, angry, depressed, etc. When I am in a positive frame of mind I want to do physical activity. I'm not sure why my creative side takes over when I feel feelings toward the negative end of the spectrum? But, there it is!

I'm an SR spiced up with a dash of EI. I like reading, dancing, gardening and tiffany glass technique. I agree that this may have something to do with personality - for me as a SR, e. g., it's always very satisfying and important to end up with visible, touchable results when doing something. Gardening and tiffany are both perfect methods to reach this. The dancing touches two of my traits: first, my need to get in touch with others to be happy (I'm anything but a loner!) and second, my rather joy- and playful side. As for the reading: I think this might also have to do something with my general interest in other people, their minds, their ideas, their fears and dreams, their strenghts and weaknesses. I prefer books concentrating on the "inner" plot - not too much action or suspense coming from the outer world, but a lot of introspection. I want to understand the motives of the acting people and follow their thoughts. That's certainly a trait of both SRs and EIs.

I think it is also a trait for Di's. Being one, I, like you, love the motives and drving forces of why a character is doing something. It adds more depth to the characters. It lets me get into that characters mind and try to figure out plots based on the characters inner workings.

I'm a DI. I like sketching, water colors, reading, walking, seeing places. Mostly, things that I do on my own.

I prefer hobbies that I do on my own, also. It seems I'm able to concentrate more easily that way.

Well, as you're a DI this comes as no surprise to me - most "introvert" types profit most from hobbies and leisure activities they do on their own, it simply recharches their batteries best ... ;-)

This is a very interesting subject.
I am an introvert and although I do have friends, who I visit and they visit me, I love my own time and space in which to indulge in my drawing and painting ( realist), crocheting , sewing, glass carving and painting and just about anything else that I can fiddle around with to see what happens.
I too have always needed an outlet and for many years used to ride horses and teach equestrian activities.
My horses, along with my husband were my best friends, but now they are all gone, so I have turned more and more to my easel .
Travelling alone is also calling to me and in the near future, I am thinking of packing myself and my little dog into my car and heading north into Queensland.

I have found that the artistic ablility runs through my family as well, and although I have not really looked into the personalities of the people involved, it would be interesting to find out about this.
I do know that my brother, who is also an artist is like me in personality, as are two of my sons, but my daughter, who holds exhibitions, I am not so sure of, but will find out.
I dont know whether I have made any sense here, but you have now opened up a can of worms in my mind with regard to the personalities of different artists that I know.
You may know the saying, " Curiosity killed the cat", well it looks as though this old cat is about to place her life on the line......................lol.
