Language

I was wondering if there is anyone else on here that takes an avid interest in languages. I've been interested in languages since about my 6th grade year of school. Ive studied many languages (at least 30 possibly up in the 45 to 50 range, though unfortunately I don't have the concentration ability to stick with a single one to learn it fluently) and have also created a few constructed languages.

I'm interested in meeting people with similar interests.

I speak German, English, Spanish and French and I learned Latin. But I definitely would like to add Arabic and and Chinese or Japanese to that someday.

I saw on your profile that you're into Esperanto. I like that idea, too. Unfortunately it didn't gain many friends. So, in our days English is the lingua franca of this world. And hey: it's great to see that we can talk to people all over this planet using a single language and this platform called iPersonic ...; ▶ Reply to This

Permalink Reply by Cody on June 10, 2008 at 6:07pm: Cool. The two languages i cna speak the best (excluding english) are French and Esperanto, though I'm not fluent in either yet (for french it's easier for me to read and understand than speak it).
Others that Ive looked at include: Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Italian, Swedish, Dutch, German, Irish, Latin, Romanian, Turkish, Hebrew, Swahili, Cherokee, Inuit, Czech, Tagalog, Old English, Old Norse, Finnish, etc

My mother tongue is French, but I'm also learning English, Spanish, German, and Japanese~ I'm trying to concentrate mainly on the last two though, because uh, I have a terrible lack of vocab in German, and you know how you have to learn kanjis in Japanese. =P; ▶ Reply to This

I enjoyed french when i took it, much more so than english. Native english speakers have a tough time with it too, sometimes =O

Kanji has given me much problems, thats why i worked with chinese, i hear it helps with learning kanji, and its much easier to learn through chinese first (each ideogram has only 1 pronunciation i chinese).

I'll just learn actual words and their kanjis. It's less confusing that way, but have to look up in the dictionnary a lot. Oh well, when you really want to learn a language (I've always liked japanese musics/dramas) you don't mind that, right XD.

I speak Indonesian, a bit Balinese, German (High-German & Swiss-German) & English. I'd learned French in senior high, but it doesn't left much now. Once I'd learned Japanese and Sanskrit (Devanagari) too, in a very short time. And now I really wanna talk in Czech, so I could talk with the family of my mom-in-law's sister.

Right now my English become passive, coz I speak Swiss-German at home. My brain doesn't have a big place for many laguages, i think. ;); ▶ Reply to This

Permalink Reply by Elsa on August 17, 2008 at 12:10am: I love them! And I can learn them well, but I don't have the time to do that! Maybe when I graduate I will :) Ever seen the interpreter? that's what I wanted to do, but it went to second place after I started my major.
I recommend www.babbel.com for you to practice and learn new vocab and pronounciation. The real way to learn languages however is to practice them as often as possible with native speakers and always have to courage to apply new formulas and grammar you just learned. At least, that works for me. Oh and when there is friendship or even more than that involved, your learning capacity grows exponentially ;)

What do you mean by concentration ability? do you get distracted easily sometimes or ALL the time?
